Sadness: A second Baroque legend falls
RIPDays after the death of Alice Harnoncourt, concertmaster and co-founder of Concentus Musicus Wien, we learn of the passing of Marie Leonhardt, concertmaster of the Leonhardt Consort founded in 1955 with her husband Gustav Leonhardt.
These two ensembles were ice-breakers in the early-music movement and the two couples maintained a close friendship.
“The old order changeth.” Both husband and wife teams were such inspirations to so many. RIP.
Two ladies “in the background”… but very prominently so. — R.I.P.
We both knew them well and appreciated their artistic achievements and their human warmth. This is extremely sad news.
I hope all is well with you, dear Max!
After I finished singing in a rehearsal, you turned to me, said I had a lovely voice. Round Top, TX. Have lived in that memory for years!
Just found out the wife of a friend studied w you. She is a violinist in Colorado Springs.
Very sad news. R.I.P.
Marie Leonhardt has left very few recordings as soloist. My favourite recording of J.S.Bach’s Concerto for flute, violin and cembalo in A major BWV 1044: Marie Leonhardt plays the violin solo-part, the other solists being Frans Brüggen (flute), and Gustav Leonhardt (cembalo). The Leonhardt-Consort includes a young Sigiswald Kujiken as 1:s violin, since Marie Leonhardt played the solo. The vinyl LP is very hard to find. There’s a CD reissue in Teldec’s Leonhardt Edition, also not easy to find nowadays. I found the recording in youtube:

FYI I have a copy of the LP and see several available on the Web including at https://www.zweischeiben.de/en/gustav-leonhardt-festkonzert-des-barock/t77352 and https://www.ebay.es/itm/163493407701.
Thank you. I see that Warner issued an (enlarged) Leonhardt Edition so that the recording is currently available on CD.
A quartet reunited. RIP
When I studied in Vienna, Nikolaus was too reserved whereas I had many nice convos w Alice. And now Marie has passed!
