Interesting in that I don’t think anyone would see Fort Worth as a step up, but perhaps after 21 years in Atlanta his ambitions might be to conduct big orchestras but not necessarily music-director them.

What a fine conductor he is; it probably is time to move on. He made so many excellent recordings for Telarc in Atlanta and sadly, given the state of orchestral recording in the US, unless you go to Fort Worth it’s going to be hard to hear him – and I can’t afford Aspen anymore! And what a remarkable TV interview! A story of this type and length wouldn’t appear even in places with “big time” conductors like LA or NYC.
I thought the Fort Worth Symphony has had a lot of labor/management disputes and problems, etc.
They have.
