When Mark C Hanson quit 10 months ago as chief executive of the San Francisco Symphony, the word was he was suffering burnout from dealing with the demands of Covid and DEI – Diversity, Equality and Inclusion.

So as of today Mark is to be the new president of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, in a city with an even worse DEI status and none of SanFran’s sunny temperament.

Go figure.

This post is weak even by internet standards.
Nothing at all is said about Mark C. Hanson’s new responsibilities, what his plans are for the Baltimore Symphony, why he was chosen over others, etc. etc. etc.
Just a gratuitous swipe at two American cities.
    Weak.

Out of the pot, into the frying pan. He must have needed the money.

  • Jeffrey Biegel says:

I’ve known Mark since his time with the Rockford Symphony, and, he helped navigate the Milwaukee Symphony to premiere Lowell Liebermann’s third piano concerto. He is a humble, kind, passionate administrator and I wish him and the Baltimore Symphony new success in the coming years. Good guy!

  • The View from America says:

Hanson’s been all over the place. He was with the Houston Symphony and Milwaukee Symphony as well — maybe elsewhere too.

  • CA says:

A better track record than his processor would be a likely guess.

  • Evan Tucker says:

Not gonna lie. This sounds like a prelude to Jonothon Hayward. I hope he does well but so far he strikes me as flash.

  • Stephen Owades says:

    Perhaps “the word” was wrong.

  • Dave says:

    Oh god, who cares.

  • PaulD says:

Alsop’s upping the BSO’s DEI game by “reimagining” Beethoven’s Ninth.

Alsop thinks that audiences “endure” the first three movements to get to the dessert of the fourth.

We in Baltimore are happy to have him. I hope this more detailed article from today’s Baltimore Sun is accessible without a subscription:

The viola section in Baltimore is definitely an upgrade. There’s some really GREAT musicians are in that orchestra. Hanson’s predecessor should not be in an organizational leadership position again.
    Larry, GO PRACTICE!!

With enough earwax, the NEW improved Westminster Choir from the former Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey will sound as good as it did before all was pawned, except the name. What’s in a name. To the true Educator, the name’s the game. Or, as they say in the Business School Education hustle, a name is nothing but something the Bard dreamed up to subgenericize a bunch of roses.

I dislike ‘Slipped Disc’ the title and the content .Assinine comments on pampered musical clowns.
