San Francisco Symphony mourns English horn, 72
RIPThe death has been communicated of Julie Anne Giacobassi, English horn player with the San Francisco Symphony from 1981-2006.
She has been described as ‘the expressive heart of the orchestra.’
A graduate of the University of Michigan, before joining the San Francisco Symphony, she played oboe and cor anglais in the Shreveport Symphony, National Ballet Orchestra, the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, Wolf Trap, and the American Camerata for New Music.
Oh, what a shame. She was truly a great player.

She made a Bespoke English Horn Peg with a Super Ball at the Floor-end,
to more comfortably support that heavy Instrument.
Inspired me to do something similar on my Bass Clarinet.

They always have her retirement year wrong. Julie Ann Giacobassi retired in July 2007, not 2006. Adam Dinitz would not become interim EH until July 2007, and then Russ deLuna would succeed her in September 2007
She was a sterling player
A fine performer in the past here at the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap.
Such a loss. She was such a wonderful musician. I recall a Mahler Ich bin der Welt Abhanden Gekkomen with her english horn solo that was unforgettable.
The first time I saw a performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G back in the ’80s, I was lifted into the stratosphere when Julianne played the mesmerizing 2nd movement melody. I came back to see the next performances! She inspired me to play that movement on the piano.
She actually retired in 2007. I and my family knew her
