Red Bull Theater’s world premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher’s new adaptation of  Ben Jonson’s The Alchemist, directed by Jesse Berger, had to cancel its final performances at off-Broadway’s New World Stages in December 2021 due to breakthrough cases of COVID-19 within the company.  Fortunately, after the enforced cancellation, Red Bull Theater produced a high-definition recording of the comedy, which now streams On Demand.

To bring you up to date: We’re in London. 1610. It’s plague time again. When a wealthy gentleman flees to the country, his trusted servant opens his house to a pair of con artists and sets up a den of criminal capitalism. Claiming alchemical powers, the quick-witted trio fleeces an onslaught of greedy sheep with their virtuosic ability to improvise amidst increasingly frantic comings and goings. It’s comic gold with dupes, double-dupes, duels, disguises, and a lucky flea named “Lewis”. The cast includes Jacob Ming-Trent, Manoel Felciano, Jennifer Sanchez and Nathan Christopher.
