Cleveland Institute of Music has appointed the Uruguayan Carlos Kalmar to be principal conductor and director of orchestral and conducting programs.

Kalmar, 63, has just finished his stint as music director of the Oregon Symphony, where he spent 18 years.

He succeeds Carl Topilow who led the conducitng department at the institute for 37 years.
