Flying Norse: Lise’s about
mainThe extraordinary young Wagnerian Lise Davidsen is making her presence felt in London this week to address the Wagner Society and launch a new recording.
Last weekend, she sang her first Jenůfa on Dutch Radio.
Covid, somehow, has not stalled her ascent.
Looking forward to it.
An impressive Wagnerian talent at age 34. Hope she doesn’t burn herself out like Cheryl Studer.
Well, let’s see if Davidsen’s singing career lasts as long as Studer’s and with as much versatility, distinction and vocal face.
Versatility? You mean indiscriminate choices with little suitability? Her stock is low and with good reason, she is a deeply unmemorable singer. I don’t think someone with as majestic a voice as Davidsen, need fear comparisons with the likes of Studer. What next, will you compare Nilsson to Emma Kirkby?
To elevate the newbie Davidsen at the expense of the veteran Studer is not only stupid but disingenuous. When and if the newbie ever finds a way to loosen herself from the chains of unreasonable expectations and fear of letting go, to become her own voice, then we can compare apples to apples. But only then.
She seems to be doing a pretty good job of sounding like herself so far, IMHO. But if things go well, it’s exciting to think about where she could be in 10 years.
Yes, coming February 8 Lise Davidsen will become 34 years of age.
And her performance of the title role in Janacek’s Jenufa last Saturday in Amsterdam was unforgettable as were all collegue singers, orchestra and choir under the baton of Patrick Lange.
Lise Davidsen did a very nice interview last Tuesday evening (as did Ann Murray on Monday) for the London Wagner Society. The London Wagner Society have been getting some terrific people to interview, and brightening up our long winter nights.
The few times I went to a Wagner Society meeting they were all 70, 80-year old fogeys. No wonder opera is dying.
You must have felt right at home.
no gramps, I’m 39.
fantastic for Lise and all else concerned with her upcoming recording
good for her! Hopefully the pandemic will not affect her success
