The grand organ has been painstakingly removed from the fire-damaged cathedral in a process that is two months ahead of schedule. But the work of restoration will take at least four years, maybe more.

Here’s a summary of the sorry situation.

“Sorry situation”? Why? The sorry situation is the fact that Notre Dame was badly ravaged by fire. It’s remarkable that the organ can be restored, and unsurprising it will take a very long time.

Credit where credit is due. This is a good news story in the darkness of 2020.

Yes, this is good news to be had, albeit in a year filled with precious little other good news. May this herald happier, better and brighter things to come in 2021!

  • Edward says:

Hardly surprising, the refurbishment of York Minster’s organ began in October 2018 and not due to be completed until Spring 2021, about 2.5 years, and that wasn’t severely damaged, and isn’t in a building where access will be very limited/difficult for the foreseeable future. 2024 in the circumstances is quite impressive. As someone else has said, it’s a very fortunate that the organ survived relatively intact and wasn’t as damaged as the cathedral’s roof.

  • Edgar Self says:

Does anyone know which organ-bullders are doing the work of restoration?

  • Jack says:

I daresay that Notre Dame is not going to be ready for some time well after 2024, so let the workers take their time to do outstanding work to restore this great instrument.
