The song was introduced by Mary Martin as a statue come to life in the 1943 Broadway musical ONE TOUCH OF VENUS. She probably sang it without a cigarette.
It is kind of you to make comparison between my wife and Teresa Stratas and Lotte Lenya. Praise indeed.
Rosalind Plowright is wonderful! Very chanteuse-like.
Given her usual repertoire, it’s a pleasurable surprise to hear her sing this song.
BTW, RP doesn’t really smoke that cigarette – she mostly holds an unlit one, and if my eyes aren’t deceiving me, that single puff of smoke at the beginning is CGI’d in.
The fabulous Ute Lemper sang a great version of this song too, with John Mauceri conducting the RIAS Berlin Kammerensemble, on London CD 425-204-2, “Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill”. All Weill fans should hear this record, and if you haven’t, you’re really missing something.
