Hamburg hall secures more funding
mainThis morning’s press release is not vulgar enough to mention numbers:
The Swiss private bank Julius Baer, a Principal Sponsor of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg since 1 January 2018, has extended its sponsoring partnership with the Elbphilharmonie for another three years. The new agreement will start on 1 January 2021.
The proverbial throwing good money after bad.
My fly on the wall tells me that nobody has dared to tell Mr Baer about the corona virus as yet.
Anyone who now dares to cough during a performance will be ejected by PPE-donned ushers who will summarily throw the concert-goer 37+ meters into the Elbe from the viewing deck.
There is a special door for such purposes in the foyer, with the sign ‘Abstürz verboten!’, which opens directly to the open air and the Elbe beneath. It has already served a couple of times after Klangkunst performances when listeners took the aural experience too much to heart.
Its very smart decision for both party’s
great return of investments for the Julius Baer Banc

A generous sponsor gives money to the arts in the time of need, and all the first comments have to add is snark instead of praise.
True…. it is a great gesture which should be an example for other wealthy parties. It seems to me that there should be enough funds with private people in Europe to be able to keep the arts afloat, together with responsible governments, even during a longer period of – say – a year or two. That would not be a matter of charity or of love for the arts, but of identity. The arts express who we are and who we want to be, a signal to future generations. Of course, most of the arts we want to be protected are old and from the past – THAT is what we want to be. The irony is that our best is what we have inherited.
Does anyone know how much worth the Elbphilharmonie is to Julis Baer? Curious to know…
We know they value it at least at the amount they were prepared to pay the Elbphilharmonie for the sponsorship (e.g. at least several million euro per year).
Julius Baer’s other sponsorships include the Verbier Festival, the Zaryadye Moscow Concert Hall, and Andermatt Music’s “Young Artist Concert Programme.”
And it should be noted that the private bank expanded its global footprint by opening a new office in Hamburg in 2005, then in Verbier and Moscow, both in 2008. It also has branch offices in Lucerne and Lugano, both of which are a short drive to Andermatt.
The aim of the sponsorship, undoubtedly, is to strengthen the private bank’s position in its key markets while increasing closeness with its clients, many of whom also happen to be patrons of these cultural institutions.
It’s a great strategy that can be a win-win for both the sponsor and sponsee. I call it “doing well by doing good”, and I only with more are following JB’s example.
Wonderful news! Let’s hope the Martha Argerich Festival with the Symphoniker Hamburg at the Elbphilharmonie will continue with Julius Baer’s renewed sponsorship.
And lest we all forget how Argerich lost her beloved Lugano Festival:

Frankly I don’t get how anyone would try to put a negative spin on this news, least of all someone who loves and cares about music.
