    Dear Norman Lebrecht,
I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed yesterday’s Shiur “Why Jews need Music”
Two questions if I might and two suggestions for future topics.
Question:One need not be a great musicologist to detect that the opening bars of Act Two the garden scene of Verdi,s Don Carlo is exactly the same as the Chanukah hymn Maotz Tsur.Question is Did Verdi appropriate the already existing melody of Maotz Tsur,or was Verdi,s opening bars subsequently appropriated by an inventive synagogue chazzan or choirmaster..

Question :Speaking of appropriation ,I have always been told that Violettas death bed aria in La Traviata “Addio del passatto”was note for note a Ladino melody that a Jewish neighbor had provided Verdi.Would you know if this story has any basis or is it totally apocryphal
