Polish hearthrob is out long-term
mainThe baritone Mariusz Kwiecień has confirmed that ‘due to personal reasons’ he won’t be singing Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa in Don Carlo at Covent Garden this June and July. That’s more than two years on the sidelines.
His replacement will be Luca Micheletti.
… or is it that he just can’t sing? 2 yrs without much activity stretches the idea that he is actually a singer any more. of course, if there are genuinely ‘personal reasons’ then the public would be more than understanding with just a little transparent honesty, rather than hiding behind the blanket excuse which is meaningless. In any event, wish him well, so long as no conductor criticises him for wearing dark glasses next time he sings
Do you share all your issues on social media? Why should he communicate his personal life with the entire world. Especially, opera lovers – cruel people.
I hope he recovers soon. He is a fantastic singer & a pleasant personality.
“Personal reasons” means “none of your business.” If he wanted to explain, then he would. He doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.
But my fly on the wall knows exactly what is going-on. But she does not want to tell anybody. And my PA also says she is in the know and walks around here with a mysterious smile on her lips. Music life without mystery would be even duller than it is already.
Dot your i’s and count your t’s.
Two.
Mariusz suffers of a serious back/neck problem which inhibits him to perform.
This is tragic!
He was unable to finish the last five performances that he began at the MET, two Figaros and three Pearl Fishers, about ten months apart. He’s sung there since 1999 but he’s only 47, so I sincerely hope that whatever has been causing him vocal trouble is something that he will be able to work through and conquer.
Sad news. Hope he comes back in better form. Feel for him as a smashing artist and as a human being. To dedicate one’s life to anything and then that change for whatever reason merits sympathetic understanding and
support. #BeKind
Whatever is happening, it’s very sad, and I for one miss seeing and hearing him on the world’s stages. I last caught him in the recent production of Roberto Devereux at the Met, with Sondra Radvanovsky, in 2016, and I guess I’m lucky, as he started disappearing from cast lists shortly after that. This can’t be easy for an artist of his stature. Wishing him all the best!
