Low times for Polish baritone
mainMariusz Kwiecień is having a tough year.
He fell out of Don Giovanni in Dallas last April.
Then he got dropped by the Met from Pearl Fishers in November.
Now he has cancelled the same opera in Houston ‘due to personal circumstances’.
Alexander Birch Elliott, who replaced Mariusz at the Met to great reviews, will step in once more.
Mariusz also canceled performances of “Onegin” in his beloved Krakow opera in December.
My understanding was that he was not “dropped”, but replaced due to illness.
Perhaps we need more information before making statements implying that there may be other reasons.

Any singer who says ‘for personal reasons’ asks for ambiguity.
And any singer is entitled to his/her privacy, just like the rest of us.
I hope that Mariusz soon recovers from whatever is troubling him. He’s a compelling performer when in good shape. I wish him well.
