The Brazilian pianist, who fractured his upper right arm in a fall in Rio de Janeiro, has undergone a complex four-hour operation, which surgeons believe was successful.

He is expected to leave hospital in 2-3days.

Freire, who is 75, will be out of action for three months.

‘He was trying to proect his hands when he fell onto his shoulder,’ said his companion Rosana Martins.

Thank you for sharing this, Norman. Fortunately, Nelson did not cause more damage, and has been in very good care. We will pray for his complete recovery and hope the coming weeks and months will be good ones for him.

He’s an enormously talented pianist. Let’s hope for a quick and full recovery.

Jeffrey Biegel, many thanks for your report of Nelson Freire’s condition, which is promising and gives hope. He first came tp notice by playing a gorgeous Bach-Siloti Organ Prelude in G minor that his Brazilian compatriot Guiomar Novaes often opened her recitals with. I’ve followed his career ever since, through Villa-Lobos to the Brahms concertos and am another well-wisher praying for his recovery.

Thank you, kindly. Nelson is one of our most respected and revered musicians. We pray he will be blessed to recover and play on for many years to come.

I’m with you on all of this, Jeffrey. I got to hear about this awful accident of Freire just a few minute ago. I suspect that Martha Argerich – his long-time good friend and fellow two-piano performer – will be at his side.

Gerrie Collins (who considers herself a ‘friend’ of both these great pianists).
