Spanish soprano: I was raped in New York
mainThe opera and crossover soprano Ainoha Arteta has told an RTVE television interviewer that she was raped in her New York apartment while studying at the Actor’s Studio.
She told no-one at the time and came close to suicide. Now, she is speaking out about violence against women.

Thanks to Scherzo for the alert.
“confessed” is an odd choice of words. Isn’t it the wrongdoer who confesses?
Are you sure that confess is the right word to use when describing the testimony of a woman who claims to have been raped?
She “confessed” it? You mean she was owning up to wrong-doing?
Basic English: To confess is to admit or state that one has committed a crime or is at fault in some way.
She is the rape victim, not the perpetrator. She thus sadly REVEALED what had happened.
I found this other meaning at dictionary.com. ‘acknowledge something reluctantly, typically because one feels slightly ashamed or embarrassed’. Usage here seem OK to me.
So she has something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about.
As in the title “Edward the Confessor”….
Not at all.
NO.*
(*If you plan to turn this into a game of throw-out-the-context — “oh, then she’s lived a 100% blameless life in all respects, like the Buddha?” — then you’ll have to play it with yourself.)
Can we get an English translation of this TV interview? As a pianist/coach I was lucky to work with her in NY when she was studying with Franco Iglesias in the late 90’s to early 2000’s. I remember hearing her Met debut as Mimi. She’s a truly fine artist and was great to work with. A beautiful woman with an equally beautiful voice. It looks like her career is mostly based in Europe now.
I think she never connected with the kind of audiences the Met tend to attract, and the voice might have been a tad small for the Met. I think she is better off in Europe, where she can carve a more interesting career than she would at the Met as a house soprano with a lot of competition for the kind of light lyric parts she was being offered.
For people asking for translation she said she was living in the meat packing area and came home late at night due to her work as an au pair and was violently raped the day she got her first opera job and had 4 days to prepare for it at palm beach. She thought she might be killed and the police told her she should consider herself lucky she wasn’t killed and she decided to take that attitude. It marked her and when she was shown sexual interest after that she honestly felt repulsed and shut off many possible situations. I think it was very good of her to share this, brava
