Daniele Gatti: I am particularly happy
mainStatement by the music director of the Opera di Roma:
It is an honor for me to be able to embrace this new role at the Teatro dell’Opera in my nation’s capital. Upon General Manger Carlo Fuortes’ invitation two years ago, I set out on a journey with the musicians and all those who work in the Theatre, which has given us great satisfaction. Together we brought two works to life, Tristan und Isolde and La Damnation de Faust which won the Abbiati Prize; and, we have just inaugurated this season with a new Rigoletto. I am particularly happy to be able to intensify my work here and link myself to a theatre that has recently distinguished itself for the outstanding quality of its projects and the work of all the people involved in realizing them.
And so it goes.
He would be. He would be. So was Berlusconi for long long until he wasn’t.
Given Italy’s escalating fiscal crisis (a sort of Greece 2.0) and resulting priorities of far greater importance than propping up opera houses, this may be as good a time as any for the government to reassess priorities and to withdraw funding from a sinking opera ship with an undesirable at the helm.

Thoroughly delighted that Maestro Gatti has gained this job, and incidentally hired by a female mayor. The Italians have my gratitude for relativising certain things and elevating others. Their priorities are better than Amsterdam’s. Rome’s gain, Netherland’s loss.
