Maestro stays: Honeck goes for short renewal
mainManfredĀ Honeck has renewed as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra until 2022.
He has held the job since 2008 but the latest renewal is somewhat shorter than most, perhaps because Honeck is suddenly a contender for the vacant Concertgebouw orchestra.
Honeck to the Concertgebouw? Well, that’s what his predecessor did.
I think Muti’s contract in Chicago ends around then too. I’ve thought for a while Honeck could wind up there after he leaves Pittsburgh.
I don’t know why the Pittsburgh Symphony does not try harder to get people from out of town to attend Honeck’s concerts. Or maybe they do but with limited success.
And while it is true that “cultural tourism to Pittsbugh” does not have the same ring as one to New York for instance (just to stay within the U.S.), one should keep in mind that Fallingwater, as well as two other Frank Lloyd Wright houses are about 1 hour drive from Pittsburgh. Plus there is some lovely nature around the town.
A Frank Lloyd Wright house during the day and a Manfred Honeck concert at night: there are not many better ways to spend a day for me.
Add the nice restaurants, and you’ve got a nice weekend from Washington, DC.
I drive to Pittsburgh for concerts from Baltimore.
When I visited Fallingwater last year, I found it even more stunning than in the photographs. As I was leaving I was wondering when I’d have a chance to go back.
Indeed.
Am going from NY to hear the PSO and Honeck next weekend!
The Frick Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Museum can fill a day, too.
Why would a fine ensemble like this continue with this md…he is good, no doubt.
But it is time for home grown future greats… the Alondra de la Para and Eric Jacobson types of the US of A
How about looking for domestic Honecks?
Why? Honeck and Pittsburgh have been extraordinarily successful. Why does his place of birth matter?
Honeck is from planet Earth, so he is home grown. Or what do you mean?
You mean from Pittsburgh?
Are you concerned about transatlantic traveling conductor’s carbon dioxide emissions?
