Manfred Honeck has renewed as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra until 2022.

Honeck to the Concertgebouw? Well, that’s what his predecessor did.
I think Muti’s contract in Chicago ends around then too. I’ve thought for a while Honeck could wind up there after he leaves Pittsburgh.
I don’t know why the Pittsburgh Symphony does not try harder to get people from out of town to attend Honeck’s concerts. Or maybe they do but with limited success.
And while it is true that “cultural tourism to Pittsbugh” does not have the same ring as one to New York for instance (just to stay within the U.S.), one should keep in mind that Fallingwater, as well as two other Frank Lloyd Wright houses are about 1 hour drive from Pittsburgh. Plus there is some lovely nature around the town.
A Frank Lloyd Wright house during the day and a Manfred Honeck concert at night: there are not many better ways to spend a day for me.
Add the nice restaurants, and you’ve got a nice weekend from Washington, DC.
