First reactions to Bayreuth’s blue-white Lohengrin

The staging of the new #Lohengrin in #BayreutherFestspiele looks like the attempt of a first class primary school of Maya the bee…

Hands down the best so far Waltraud Meier as Ortrud. So evil!

,Lohengrin‘ as a singing painting… fantastic soloists and choir, great orchestra and impressive art by Neo Rauch. No stage direction. #FB18 #Lohengrin pic.twitter.com/cz3YOI9gn2

Could just repost this with slightly altered names. High as a kite after listening on @BR_KLASSIK and only able to speak in emoji
Thielemann 🔥🔥🔥(new Lohengrin speed record?)
Zeppenfeld 😍 even better than in London, that prayer was 🤯
Beczala – wowwowwow 🤩#BFLohengrin https://t.co/vbS3soncIF— amalas (@MilymeterA) July 25, 2018
#bflohengrin sounding very authentic so far. Beczała sounding heavenly, Konieczny the best since Uhde, Zeppenfeld colourful, Waltraud is Waltraud, Silinš luxury casting, Harteros not up to their level unfortunately. Thielemann’s conducting is absolutely top.

#BFlohengrin – Piotr #Beczała singt einen “anständigen” Lohengrin! pic.twitter.com/wIQgk02ZE1

Blauerngrin.
+1
Wieland Wagner’s 1958 production was apparently nicknamed “Lohenblue”, for the same reason.
“Harteros not up to their level” — ??? That would be a surprise.
I didn’t see/here it all, and there were a few phrases that were not as spot-on as I would expect from her, but we are all human, even people who demand of themselves the utmost striving for the very best. And from what I know about her, she is a real perfectionist. Who knows how well or otherwise she was on the night I’d à Bayreuth première.

I’m interested to see what time Thielemann clocked in at. Certainly, Lohengrin is fairly unique in the sense that it doesn’t necessarily suffer from being sped up slightly. I’m no fan of Regie, but I do appreciate what I’ve seen thus far. Certainly, whatever one might thing of the direction, it does contain that sense of ineffable aesthetic beauty and mysticism necessitated by the music (unlike its predecessor).
It was terrific. I was there. Amazingly consistent musical values and a thought-provoking, ‘feminist’ and ultimately green production that (amazingly) did not irritate overmuch.
Don’t understand the comment on Cheryl Studer. Is that areference to an earlier performance, a last second cast chsnge, or an error?
The Studer picture (with Paul Frey) is from the Werner Herzog production which dates back to 1987 (although the still is probably from the performance recorded in 1990). The carrier pigeon was obviously delayed on its journey back to SD Towers!!
Brexit is wreaking havoc on the piegons.
The tweet is certainly odd but kind of apt since Bayreuth has not heard a more sublime Elsa (or Elisabeth) since back then. As heard over the airwaves yesterday, Harteros sounded like nothing but Studer’s poor country cousin.
It’s a shame that SD removes old posts after a year or two. Because I clearly remember NL writing some time ago that he was through with Bayreuth and wouldn’t be going again. But from all these posts, it does now look like he’s there again.
1 We don’t delete old posts. 2 I’m not there.
I assume this Bayreuth ‘Blue-White’ was Low in Green …
Kermit the Frog always coveted the title rôle, being Low and Green …
