Rare video: Rozhdestvensky takes instruction from Shostakovich
mainThis video comes from rehearsals of The Nose in Moscow, 1975.
Also in the front row: Irina and Maxim Shostakovich.
Wonderful to hear those voices.
Gennady Rozhdestvensky died this weekend, aged 87.
I think they were discussing Jacque Tati’s “Mon Oncle”, which they had watched in Shostakovich’s apartment the night before.

Fascinating.
I wonder whether the regime had ordered those dark glasses, to ensure the colouring of S’s music took on the appropriate soviet hue.
Or they only had this one type of glasses. Central planned economy.
Georgy Sviridov, Shostakovich’s pupil, had something quite similar. Coincidence or not.
When you live in a horror show, the dark glasses probably help soften the psychological carnage.
Yes, that must be it.
He once told me that he never rehearsed for more than 45 minute’s. Let the performance speak for itself.
He lied. I timed him at 45:32.
What are the chances of getting a nice boxed set of all Rozhdestvensky’s USSR recordings? Remastered with a nice booklet. Then the BBC should do the same, and borrow the excellent Chandos recordings to fill it out.
Thanks.
This video’s not good legacy to GR personality. He smoke in proximity to D.Shostakovich that dying of lung cancer 1975, not asking permission from lady.
??? . . .
Hello, Soviet Russia; remember?
