Just in: Portugal scraps two orchestras
mainWe hear that the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra (OCP) and Portuguese Youth Orchestra (JOP) have lost their state funding for 2018 to 2021.
This means imminent extinction.
The JOP are fighting the decision on social media.
Considering the economic crisis these countries are going through, I wonder what the arts funding is like now in Greece and Italy
Arts funding is in fact increasing in Portugal, though not fast enough perhaps.
Those are two very mediocre orchestras that shouldn’t be state funded, certainly the money can be put to better use, there are better orchestras, theaters, ballet companies etc that could use it.
Portugal was supposed to be fighting the austerity trend, maybe not in the arts.
These are outstanding orchestras that should be state funded.
I saw JOP twice in Berlin at the Konzerthaus, and the young musicians were great.
The audience was moved and delighted, myself and my two kids!
I hope they succeed.
