Death of a major horn player, 79
mainFerenc Tarjáni died in Budapest on December 27.
A member of the Hungarian Wind Quintet, he was co-principal of Hungarian Radio Orchestra and professor of horn at the Liszt Academy of Music. Widely recorded, he was the foremost Hungarian hornist of his generation.
Tarjáni was a wonderful horn player and a master teacher. I had the pleasure of sitting in on some of his classes at the Liszt Academy, as well as translating for him at a masterclass he gave in Sydney, Australia. He was kind enough to invite me to his home when I visited Budapest. He played with a light and delicate sound with just a hint of vibrato. He was a kind and generous man who will be missed by those who had the privilege to know him. My condolences to his family. RIP Feri (tisztelt tanár úr).
Any recordings of his performances available?
A number of his recordings can be found on the Hungaroton label including the Mozart and Haydn Concertos, Beethoven Sonata and Brahms trio. A number of the original LPs were not transferred to CD but can be downloaded from the Hungaroton website
