Room at the inn: Germany halts a composer’s deportation

The Mongolian composer and teacher Zhebo was – as we have reported – ordered to leave Germany by the end of the year. All Zhebo ever wanted from boyhood was to live and work in the shadow of J S Bach.

A week before Christmas, the immigration authorities have relented, granting him a three year renewable permit.

    Does Germany have a permanent resident alien status like the US does?

    If so, what does he lack to get it?

    Good news! It shows that a blind and deaf bureaucracy machine can be halted and give space to humanist considerations. People like Zhebo contribute to a nation’s culture. Even in Germany that is a necessary good.
