Maestro move: Bamberg names Nott successor
mainBavaria’s Minister for the Arts Dr. Ludwig Spaenle has just announced the young Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša as music director of the Bamberg Symphony.
Hrůša, 34, will be the fifth chief since the orchestra was founded in 1945, made up of refugee musicians from the teutonically cleansed, soon-to-be Communist Czechoslovakia.
He says: ‘Even before I had a chance to conduct this jewel among European orchestras, I had been a huge admirer. They are an embodiment of orchestral culture, with everything imagined by this term. And with the Orchestra having its origins in Prague, we breathe the same musical air, sharing our cultural backgrounds, being artistically and historically very close. With the Bamberg Symphony, every phrase can turn to be a little miracle, and every concert is a transfiguration.’
Too bad.
Why?
They had better options.
Good for Johnny for spending so much time in Bamberg.
Hrusa is one of the very best of the young conductors around. Few can harness that same kind of energy that he seems to inspire from orchestras. Really good news for Bamberg.
Hrusa is a marvel…and so is Bamberg. What good news this is.
It’s remarkable that such a small, provincial town can have such a wonderful orchestra.
Ruben, it has a unique mandate as a touring orchestra, and this raises its profile versus comparably budgeted ensembles in Germany. (There may by no other orchestra in the world that has toured more, but this is matter for a researcher!) You might wish to investigate its history and the Czech connection. I would not say that the playing standards are especially high at the moment, although the Bamberger Symphoniker certainly ranks among Germany’s Top 20 orchestras, even considering various leading pit bands.
I’ve heard they also have an enormous amount of subscribers in Bamberg itself.
I wouldn’t say “enormous.” But the house was mostly full last time I was there, last season. It seats about 1400 and is pleasantly located. Prices are low.
What has Nott to do with any of this?
