Maestro move: Swiss winner gets his first orchestra
mainLorenzo Viotti, 27, has been named Music Director of Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon.
Winner of the 2015 Salzburg Nestle conductors competition (pictured), he is the son of the excellent Marcello Viotti, who died in 2005 at the age of 50.
Lorenzo has gained vast experience in the past two years standing in for senior conductors at major orchestras.
In Lisbon, he succeeds Joana Carneiro, who is looking after newborn triplets.
He is the real deal. Guided from the inner ear. Very rare in his generation of baton dancers to recorded music in front of mirrors. In bocca al lupo!
Heard him conducting a program with Poulenc & Messiaen. I like him a lot. Certainly a bigger deal than Mirga & co.
I hope he will eventually become a bigger conductor than his father.
Actually he follows Paul McCreesh . Joana Carneiro is the principal conductor of the ‘orquestra Sinfônica Portuguesa’ the S. Carlos National Opera orchestra . She continues her longtime link with the Gulbenkian Orchestra ( conducting today for example!).
paul mccreech is music director Gulbenkian , Joanna carneiro is md of Lisbon’s other orchestra.
Tonight he led an amazing concert of Munich Phil, doing Beethoven 5pc with Behzod Abduraimov (stunning) and Rach 2 in the second half. It’s a great deal for both.
