Death of a much-loved bass-baritone, 68
mainBasia Jaworski informs us of the death of Pieter Vis, a prolific concert singer and larger-than-life personality on the Dutch music scene. Pieter suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on Friday.
Starting out as a boy soprano, he became a prolific broadcaster, writer and musicologist. He occupied a debating space on Facebook as Piotr Ryba, the Russian translation of his name.
Tribute here.
Piotr Ryba is Polish: “Peter Fish”. Also, surely Jaworska for a woman: Jaworski is the masculine form.
PS. The Russian is unsurprisingly similar, but I don’t think it would be transliterated the same. I’m sure this is supposed to be Polish.
Yes, flamboyant figure. Promoter of young talent, also. Sad.
His pen name was Pyoter Riba, which is not quite correct Russian, either 🙂
Anyway, for those who can’t read Dutch, here’s an English version of my obituary: http://operalounge.de/history/he-could-not-give-up-singing
