A marvelous Bach conductor, particularly of the choral works. I have attended over 100 NY Phil concerts during the tenure of the last four music directors. Of these, most vivid in my recollection is a performance of the St. Matthew Passion on Holy Saturday 2008, conducted by Masur. It represented the convergence of Bach, a great Bach conductor, and the occasion of the Paschal Triduum. The performance itself was riveting, and was followed by a rousing, cheering, seven-minute standing ovation. A memory I will long cherish.
