NY Philharmonic players form string quartet
mainConcertmaster Frank Huang, Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps, and Principal Cello Carter Brey will appear as the New York Philharmonic String Quartet.
Their hitherto unannounced debut is scheduled tonight.
Not seeing anything about a quartet performance on that link. Next week they are performing Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence – a sextet commonly performed by non-established groups. It’s another matter entirely to form a string quartet – give us more info on that if it exists.
Ahem….you link to a concert in March, which is not tonight….
The “listen” tab for “Absolute Jest” sounds like a piece for string orchestra with concertante string quartet (for instance like Elgar’s Introduction & Allegro). As usual, NL takes a fairly straightforward event and finds some weird way to misrepresent it.
It’s a concerto for string quartet and orchestra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-qoOjcTruQ
If you read the article it notes upcoming performances solely as a quartet (not as soloists with the NYP) this spring, summer, and a debut at 92nd Street Y in the fall. I’ll bet this ensemble will sound fabulous! These are tremendous instrumentalists and artists. Can’t wait to hear them!
Hm. From the link provided, I couldn’t find an article or anything mentioning the soloists from this concert performing elsewhere as a quartet.
Yes – sorry I read that here:

Ohhhhh… OK, thanks.
Maybe your link is what NL thought he was posting? It seems to say all the stuff he said his link would say…
