What Mary Poppins looks like in German
mainThe first German-language version of the Walt Disney musical will hit Vienna at the beginning of October. It’s a transfer of the Cameron Mackintosh 2004 London production, which has sold over 11 million tickets on tour. Annemieke von Damm stars in the Julie Andrews role.

Might it be appropriate to draw attention to the Viennese version of My Fair Lady (a recording – search “Wiener Fassung” – is still available)? This translation, by the cabaret genius Gerhard Bronner, is to my taste often wittier and more effective than the original, although this is no doubt sacrilege.
