Green light for new Halle Orchestra building

The conversion of a disused 1859 Manchester church into a rehearsal, performance and education centre received planning permission today after a long process.

All the Halle needs now is to raise some money.

A sombre, big square cube is all the architects could think of. Do they think classical music is ‘square’? Or do they want to express their idea that classical music is about to die? – the object looks like a giant coffin. It seems they wholeheartedly want to avoid any impression that something like art will be taking place in that silly thing.

Hallé St Peter’s has been in use for two or three years. This is a new proposal to extend the facility. Do keep up!
