Ironically, both guest conductors performed Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony in Montreal (Lanaudière for Honeck) with their orchestras in the past two years. Honeck was light-years ahead of Dudamel, making the symphony truly exciting. Dudamel, only last week, substituted coherence and intensity for excessive rubato and unnecessary accelerandi. While the LA Phil played well, it was nothing like the Pittsburghers gave us.
Nonetheless, Dudamel also conducted Corigliano’s First Symphony with masterly precision and intensity. Best wishes to both!
Manfred Honeck is replacing Dudamel. I’m sure it will be a great concert, regardless!
This is fantastic news. Honeck is a profound musician and an elegant, subtle and hugely skilled conductor, completely immersed in the central European tradition. Frankly he should have been engaged for Bruckner 9 in the first place. What on earth can someone of Dudamel’s age and style bring to Bruckner?
Mehta made a recording of Bruckner 9 with the Wiener Philharmoniker at the age of 29 which is still very well regarded by many Bruckner connoisseurs.
Dudamel for Honeck is a very good trade indeed.
Isn’t this Dude’s second “serious flu” this season?

Dude must have caught the LA Fever! Judging from the review of their ( LA Phil ) performance at Symphony Hall ( Boston ) this past Sunday, the interpretation was also more “fire” than refinement or nuanced. I wasn’t there so I am not the one to judge….I remember to be very disappointed by the telecast performance of the Mahler 8 live from Caracas Venezuela a few years back. Personally I am very happy that Andris Nelsons will be BSO’s next Music Director – the Salome he led here in early March was phenomenal. And he promised to do more Bruckner! Amen!
Pretty interesting and sad that most people have taken it upon themselves to comment on any news regarding Dudamel with derision and contempt. What did he ever do to you?
Anonymous,
Please, Don’t take It personal to Dudamel. No one here is happy about his disease, but glad he isn’t going to conduct any concert. We just deeply dislike him as artist.
Since it would be the only week during the first half 2014 at the town, I decided to attempt one of these concerts. I was wondering that again Dudamel would jeopardize the experience, but in order to judge fairly I was trying to convincing myself that I would listen it neutrally. Now I’m not neutral. What a nice surprise! Thanks NY for this great gift. Bruckner, NY Philharmonic and Honeck sound like a top-notch trio. Like a Bordeaux wine, a change of just one grape in the mix can make a whole difference between a great and a terrible result.
