In my opinion, Dominick Argento’s operas and other music deserves a much wider place in the international repertoire. His music is well-crafted, graceful for the voice, idiomatic for whatever instruments he uses. More importantly, I find his music to be highly memorable. I especially love his song cycle “From the Diary of Virginia Woolf,” and consider it one of the greater works written for piano & voice in the second half of the 20th century. I am told by colleagues who have worked with him in his operas that he is a gracious and generous man, a true gentleman.
