Composer’s son, presumed kidnapped, is found dead
mainTwo weeks ago, the Kazakhstan composer Yerkesh Shakeyev posted a Facebook appeal, seeking the whereabouts of his son, Safar, who had gone missing in the former
capital, Almaty.
Safar, 25, graduated from two American colleges, in Danville and California. The Kazakh authorities thought he might have been kidnapped for ransom.
His body has now been found in the Yessentai River in Almaty and condolences messages are pouring in to the family.
Danville is IN California.
Unless it was Centre College in Kentucky.
He went to the Athenian school in Danville, CA. I knew him from when he went to school there.
That’s just absolutely dreadful!!! Sympathies for this man and his family.
Correction…..Almaty is no longer the capital of Kazakhstan and hasn’t been for the past 19 years. Astana is!
Dreadful story, must be unbearable for the parents.
I was just going to say the same thing, Josh. Norman Lebrecht, you failed on several accounts to properly identify concerns about this sad event for the young man and his parents, thereby scarring this story irreparably. FIrst, the capital of Kazakhstan changed 19 years ago. Second, Danville is IN Caifornia. It’s an East Bay suburb of San Francisco. So what’s the other school’s name, and where is it located? It’s as if you said, “the young man went to college in London and England.” Nonsense. Great job, Norman.
And you, Mr Stivelman, are exploiting this story as a vehicle for officious and obnoxiously expressed pedantry. The word ‘nudnik’ comes to mind.
What, a modicum of accuracy cannot be expected? And if inaccuracy is noted, it is the noticer who gets the barracking?
Funny old world.
Anyone ever figure out who killed him?
