Vienna Philharmonic concertmaster plays his last
mainThis Thursday, Rainer Küchl will take the front seat for the last time in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, 45 years after he was first appointed.
Thursday’s performance at the Vienna Opera will be his last.
We share Vienna’s thanksgiving for his phenomenal contribution.
He will be succeeded next season by 30 year-old José Maria Blumenschein.
Given his tenure, his seat, and the VPO’s policy of only having guest conductors, HIS is a memoir I should like to read…! Imagine.
The end of an era – he will be missed….
The best of the best – how appropriate, and rather poignant, to be ending his time there with Der Rosenkavalier.
What a wonderful gig in a superlative orchestra. I’d especially like to hear his opinion and anecdotes about Carlos Kleiber!!
Seen leading the VPO many times @ Carnegie Hall. Happy Retirement, Rainer!
