Just in: Met concertmaster is named DC chief conductor
NewsThe restless David Chan, concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera orchestra for the past 24 years, was named last night principal conductor of the Apollo Orchestra of Washington DC.
Earlier this month Chan was appointed director of Chicago’s new Credo Festival.
He said:’I’m honored to be part of Apollo’s vision of bringing first-rate music to the communities of the greater Washington DC area. I already sense an extremely positive rapport in my work with these superb musicians and look forward to the journey of challenging one another and growing together musically.’
Congratulations! David is a fantastic musician and a great person.
Great news! David Chan is fantastic!
Can violinist read more than one line?
yes they can do better than many conductors.
Two single line string players who come to mind are Serge Koussevitsky and Arturo Toscanini.
And Carlo Maria Giulini was a violist. I’m sure there are plenty of other examples.
Barbirolli was a cellist.
Charles Munch was concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra I believe at one point during his younger years.
David’s flawless rendering of the ‘Meditation’ from Thais a few years ago was one my ‘great moments at the MET’. Wish him well in his new assignments.
Concerning David Chan:A superb Met concertmaster for 24 years cannot reasonably called “restless”
Sarcasm?
David is one of the best musicians alive, and a man of unassailable integrity and goodwill. Brilliant choice!
Meaning he would never engage in inappropriate behavior I gather…..?
He is only one of the Met’s concertmasters. Benjamin Bowman, a truly gifted violinist, is also one, and maybe now he will be the number one concertmaster, as he deserves to be.
