We understand that the violinist Nicola Benedetti, director of the Edinburgh Festival, gave birth on Monday to her first child. Mother and baby are doing well, friends say.
Benedetti, 36, is in a relationship with the US trumpet player Wynton Marsalis.

There is a specific (and very good) reason why Benedetti deliberately keeps her relationship private. Why aren’t you kind enough to respect that?
I’m not disagreeing about their right to privacy, but this relationship and her pregnancy are common knowledge. It’s not like information about the baby or photos have been shared.
Exactly. She’s been posting photos of herself pregnant on her Instagram. Are we to believe that there wasn’t a father involved? Best wishes to her and the new dad.
No you don’t have to believe there’s no father involved. But if Benedetti chooses not to make that public, or disclose who she’s in in relationship with, you can choose to respect that wish. You probably don’t have to, but it’s classier.

I agree with Andy. She has purposely not revealed this relationship. I think it wrong that we should reveal it for her. It’s her private decision. However, now that it’s been revealed,congratulations to her on the birth of her child.
They appear in public together as a couple. As recently as May 9th, they happily posed for photos at a jazz event in London, looking very much like expectant parents.
So how, then, is this some secret that’s been illicitly or disrespectfully “revealed” against her wishes?
Interesting that all of the hand wringing seems to be about Ms Benedetti’s privacy. No similar concerns for Mr Marsalis? Perhaps some of her fans feel a discomfort and awkwardness around her relationship and prefer that it not be acknowledged.
