Wealthy business men coincidentally falling from windows, also abroad… mysterious poisonings…. journalists shot……. incomprehensible disappearances….. invaded neighbouring countries……. accidental accidents….. unexpected suicides…. ladies & gentlemen: modern Russia – made great again.

But what a relief political prisoners only die in Russia, not Ukraine – because you haven`t read it from the newspapers. And never will.

And “make great” is, indeed, such a silly slogan, Biden has kept peace for 4 years. Oh, wait…

  • Peter van Tast says:

Very sad news. I enjoyed watching on YouTube the Russian Kultura concerts “Romantic Romances”, where he was one of the two charming hosts. R. I. P.

BTW – until (I think 2017) his partner as moderator was Russian-German mezzo-soprano Maria Maksakova jr, who had a short career at the Mariinsky. She was also member of the Duma, after having voted against a Putin law she decided to leave Russia and to go to Kiev, where her politician-husband was shot.

  • Tim says:

The post said he was found “near his home”? Was he by any chance found on the sidewalk beneath an open window?

  • Potpourri says:

Goodness or My Goodness are expressions of surprise or shock in English. It does not mean that Norman Lebrecht approves of Putin’s brutality.

  • Uncle Sam says:

Look at these two clips from his YT channel: the first performance (with the military choir) happened on February 23 of this year, the second – on March 8th (exactly ONE MONTH before he took his own life). Yes, both songs are sorta melancholic ones in themselves, but still…That eerie blank expression on his face in both cases while he goes through the motions singing! This is the face of somebody, who’s deeply troubled, whose mind is elsewhere, isn’t it? And here’s what his father said, being interviewed by a major Russian newspaper after his son committed suicide (the third link):

“- Did he have a split personality?

    – No, there was no split there, there was another diagnosis, a nervous disease. And this is not depression. There’s a tricky disease there, I didn’t even realize it existed. A person with it [feels like he] loses face, loses himself, loses his body. The person seems to function. But he feels nothing, sees nothing.

    – Evgeny couldn’t move?

    – He was moving. But he said: “My head is somewhere there…”. The disease is so incomprehensible. Outwardly it does not manifest itself in any way. Outwardly he is a healthy, good, handsome guy, but inside everything is distorted. All the organs inside, he felt, were being drawn straight to his throat.”

Poor guy – whatever it was that tormented him…
