Does anyone know who the buyer was? I hope there’s some plan to honor Sondheim here— maybe with a museum or an artist’s retreat?

But I guess there’s something very Broadway about his whole saga. On Broadway you’re only open if you’re selling, and once you’re broke, you flop.

In today’s climate, I can see the new owner(s) cutting down all the trees, spreading gravel over the whole estate to house douzens of E-SUVs, and installing a gas-powered barbecue set for vegan charity receptions in support of cats, dogs and the Church.

These days, these homes are gutted and rebuilt to suit the next family who pay enormous amountsa of money for the property. His townhouse in NYC recently sold will suffer the same fate. His archives were left in his will to several organizations including the Library of Congress and his games and other bric-a-brac will be sold at Doyle in a few months. There is no reverence any longer for musical biographical cabinets of curiosities unless the composer puts the home in a foundation that cannot be sold and enough money to run it and the Intellectual Property royalties going to the Fondation to maintain the museum. Also, there are always zoning issues in residential neighborhoods.

  • zandonai says:

Sondheim should have donated it to the state so the public can pay $10 to visit.

  • Philipp Lord Chandos says:

Thinking about it, it’s only 13 times as expensive as my 100 square meter flat.

    It’s all relative.

Henry Mancini is half the age of Bruckner.

I’m half the age of Henry Mancini.

I live a mile away from the site. My bid was rejected as inadequate. Anyway there is plenty of lots of money sloshing around Litchfield County these days, mostly New York moguls in law, finance and media stars and inherited money. BTW Litchfield County is a beautiful part of the world and is only a two hour drive from Manhattan. Come visit us!
