I guess Salonen won’t be considering taking the Paris Opera job then.

  • drummerman says:

The headline is in US dollars but the story says Euros. Six million Euros = $6,498,288

  • Debussyste says:

Good ! The Paris Opera is a bottomles pit for public money with strikes every week. They will have to learn to earn money by themselves.

    • David says:

Have you ever considered that there are strikes precisely because of such treatment?? Everything in the arts is subsidized. If you do not understand that, and aren’t willing to support it, then you do not deserve to listen to classical music or go to exhibitions.

    • V.Lind says:

Its subsidy certainly makes the Royal Opera House look like poor relations.

    • Truth Hurts says:

The fact is, opera is not a priority in today’s messed up world. All companies are hurting and cutting back. Opera is dying, and stupid productions by terrible directors plus a lack of star singers, isn’t helping.

  • Andrew Powell says:

    Sell the gold tractor tires.

  • NoraB says:

Even with Dudamel’s salary back, they still need to save money?!!

  • Don Ciccio says:

“God bless public funding like we have in Europe! Unlike Americans we understand and accept that subsidies to maintain classical music establishments are part of our “social/cultural pact” that holds society together.”

And yes, I am laughing hard.

    • Truth Hurts says:

Your great public funding isn’t as strong as it used to be. And the leading European houses are staging Euro-trash productions all the time … by the way, thank you all for creating the genre Euro-trash.

      • Don Ciccio says:

Precisely so. As you could see, what I wrote is in quote. I was laughing hard at the smugness of a kraut who lectured me the exact words in a different post on this site.

  • Micaela Bonetti says:

I’m afraid Madame la ministre de la culture Rachida Dati much prefers Aka Nakyamura to opera.

    • Truth Hurts says:

People prefer and prioritize sports and movies. Nobody but the one % care (s) about opera. It’s a dying art form.
