The church has chosen Emma Gibbins, presently at Newport Cathedral.

From the announcement:

She moved to Newport in 2015 as Director of Music at Newport Cathedral, where she is responsible for directing the cathedral’s choirs of adults, boys and girls, having set up the girls’ choir from scratch. She is also in demand as an organ and piano teacher, organ recitalist and accompanist, directs the Adams Chorale and accompanies the Newport “Forget me not chorus” for dementia sufferers.

Sounds ideal and very able, a welcomed break from the preponderance of Oxbridge male organists!

  • former organist says:

Says it all in the church when only females are getting the DofM posts these days… Smacks of senior clerics dumbing down the standards and expectations of cathedral music..
This is what comes of women interferring in church matters. First priests, then Deans and Bishops, now directors of church music!
    Was Jesus a woman?

    • former organist says:

PS Women historically do not have the experiences of what has traditionally been a male only job.
Some, as girls may have sung as sopranos once they had to be admitted to the choir stalls, but hardly any were competent enough to be allowed to climb the stairs into the organ loft.
Now that disenchanted males have become disillusioned as unappreciative organists and choirmasters in the church of england by ignorant clerics who don’t want quality music spoiling their evangelistic bible bashing, female organists have now been allowed to apply and are getting top cathedral jobs, previously and rightly so, a male only domain.
Too many women musicians allowed in the church these days!

    That’s a dude.
