The Times of Malta has reported the death today of Joseph Sammut, a composer who founded the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. He was 97.

The son of Vincenzo Sammut, a bassoonist at the Royal Opera House and a cellist with the Royal Navy orchestra, Joseph Sammut joined his father’s orchestra in 1942 and eventually became its conductor. He led the RN orchestra through various transitions as Manoel Theatre Orchestra, then National Symphony Orchestra and ultimately the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
