Local media are reporting that Cornelius Meister has resigned as Generalmusikdirektor in Stuttgart, following heated disagreements with the intendant, Viktor Schoner, and his team.

Meister, 44, will leave Stuttgart in 2026. Things should be interesting between now and then.

He has no other job on the side and has been quoted as saying he will not conduct again in Bayreuth, following dissension from some musicians there.

    Verachtet mir den Meister…

  • Watson-Watt says:

He would have been a good (better) choice for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but, given the level of ignorance and the dependence on Anglophone (London and NY sales) agents nowadays to bridge the ignorance, he probably never even crossed the CSOA’s radar.

    • OSF says:

From what I can tell, he has never conducted the CSO, so indeed he was probably not on their radar for the MD job.

    • professional musician says:

Sorry, he doesn´t play in this league….Played under him. Quite average, and a very vain person.

  • Sammy says:

Another low level conductor that makes a career because there so few decent ones out there. He will land a great job soon. I’m confident

  • Anthony Sayer says:

CM is actually a phenomenal pianist, very fine musician and highly competent conductor. I’d be interested to know why there is this friction. Is he maybe a little too inflexible?

  • Roger Rocco says:

It’s tragic that it’s not just the music. But politics poisons many aspects of life. If he’s good, he won’t be unemployed for long. There’s always room at the top for greatness.

  • Blumen says:

Another average German Kapellmeister, who can play the piano but can’t conduct! I would say that 90% of conductors graduating with degrees in Germany are like this (such are their teachers), i.e. decent coach, incompetent orchestra conductor.
