The death has been reported in Israel of Amnon Weinstein, a luthier who dedicated the last quarter-century his life to restoring violins that were damaged in the Nazi Holocaust.

Amnon, born in Tel Aviv to Polish parents and trained in Cremona, was 84.

His violins toured the world.

  • Sammy says:

Ammon was second generation Israeli violin maker. He made great instruments that were used by many Israeli string players.
His family shop, in the center of Tel Aviv , 2 blocks from Rabin Square was frequented by some of today’s famous artists in their youth. Perlman, Mintz and even Daniel Barenboim who used to practice piano in the shop.
Ammon and his dad had an amazing collection of ancient string instruments and pictures of famous string players.
He will be missed by all that knew him. My violin, built by Ammon in 1968 will always be my memory of this incredible man.

A truly great man whom I was privileged to know for many years. He was a force of nature and a doer of good deeds. One of a kind! We did many interesting things together. Rest in peace xx
