New concertmaster in Vienna

ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien has confirmed that Lucja Madziar has passed her probationary year and is now 1st concertmaster. She shares the role with the Irish violinist Maighréad McCrann.

Lucja is originally from Poznan in Poland and was formerly concertmaster at Deutsche Oper Berlin.

    A bit of internet sleuthing says she plays a Landolfi violin and perhaps that is the lovely deep red instrument in the photo used here.

    It also shows a distinguished list of teachers and — I am aware our host’s term rubbed many the wrong way — “influencers,” and interestingly one of them was the very Igor Ozim whose recent death has sparked some discussion and comment on this blog.

    YouTube offers some options if you want to hear her play.

    At the risk of hijacking the topic, I just learned via a Facebook posting (so yes, error is possible) of the death in New York last fall of the marvelous, and much recorded, soloist and concertmaster Mela Tenenbaum. I am quite certain I saw no mention of it on Slipped Disc.
