The tour was originally scheduled for early March but YNS demurred in case he got a last minute invitation to the Oscars or one of the after parties.

I’m entirely sure that’s true. Maestro has pretty much become a laughing stock at this point. I finally saw the Mahler 2 scene and wow it’s awful!! Laughably awful

Regarding your headline: To reach South Korea by the shortest route, the Met orchestra would be headed WEST from North America, across the Pacific Ocean.
It would be more north than west potentially – if you headed from JFK-TPE for example along the great circle route, your initial heading would be 345° (N), of course, this would depend on whether the airline still overflies Russian airspace, and the prevailing winds.

It’s a world class orchestra and conductor so they should tour when it fits into their demanding schedule at the Met. And it is important for them to perform concert music on the stage rather than only operatic repertoire in the pit. Most professional orchestras beyond the majors, perform concert, operatic and ballet repertoire.
It’s now a rag tag pick up band that is conducted by an Instagram culotte wearing circus midget that has the musical integrity of a flea circus which is an insult to parasites which he is….he is an absentee landlord and from all accounts inside… the orchestra despises him and his coying, pandering, superficial “interpretations” where he has no clue what Verdi style or French style for that matter… the Brass in Forza were a joke and woodwinds in The Romeo sound like they were recruited from the local music department at a community college…
The tour was previously scheduled for June and July 2022, as is in 2024, so summer months each time, not changed as a result of YNS schedule / projects.
Of the 3 countries, South Korea take the crown in the number of competition winners and opera singers. Japan used to be number 1 until the 1990’s.
This photograph (which is many years old) shows a very few orchestra members backstage preparing to play (probably the party scene from Traviata). There are so many other pictures of the entire orchestra — why not use one of those???

So the Met is spending down its endowment, they’re cancelling new productions and they’re decreasing their season – But yet they’re spending a fortune taking the orchestra (NOT their main product) on an international tour? This is not to say that the Met Orchestra isn’t first-class – it absolutely is – but how does this make sense? Finally, a legit reason to criticize Gelb (the site’s favorite activity) and nary a word about this poor decision??
