Maestros and their motor cars (28): Mengelberg steers Alma Mahler
OrchestrasThis is Willem Mengelberg with his 1935 Minerva outside the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
And this is him in 1912 driving Mahler’s young widow to a concert in Frankfurt.

In 1935 he was ready for having some bad company around after the good one from the composers he had before.
Even for her time, Alma was the worst dresser. She never looked like a young widow.
In contrary, she had fantastic, symphonic hats, as can be seen in the photograph. They were as big as her late husband’s works and probably inspired by these.
