The Chinese pianist who was once Lang Lang’s arch-rival is making an appearance on Warner Records in April.

Warner is releasing a set of Mozart sonatas he recorded at the Great Hall of the Salzburg Mozarteum in November 2023.

Yundi, winner of the 2000 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, was blanked out by Chinese media after being arrested in Beijing in October 2021 on alleged morals charges.

His personal passion is Beethoven.

Good to see him back.

  • Edward Seymour says:

Yaaaaaay!… Yundi is one of my favorite pianists…. I hope to get a copy of each of his new recordings.

  • Save the MET says:

A much finer pianist than Bang Bang. I had wondered what had happened to him.

    • Zandonai says:

Once Yundi was Lost (in Chinese state pop media and in CCP house arrest for consorting with hores).

…But now he is Found (as a serious, respetful pianist unlike Bang Bang).

I attended his Chopin recital in L.A. in 2015 he was superb.

  • Andrew Powell says:

He has some 20 dates in Europe this spring. I’ll hear the first, in Freiburg, but the capacity is just 350 seats. By contrast, Bruce Liu plays at Freiburg’s main hall a few days earlier, with 1,740 seats. That’s Chopin 2000 vs Chopin 2020 for you.

On the subject of that competition, Jakub Piatek’s brief 2023 documentary, “Pianoforte,” revolves earnestly around half a dozen of the 2020 competitors.

    • BackHome says:

It’d be so nice to listen to Mozart played by Yundi in such a small set up! I hope Yundi will hold a couple of similar ones in U.S.

As for Yundi’s current situation, it surprises me that he did not take an easier path, e.g. find a faculty job or do top class private lessons. It takes courage for someone like him to come back to the stage and back to the overseas market outside China. He is almost starting from zero ground as his last Europe tour took place 8 years ago.

      • Zandonai says:

When Horowitz returned to the stage in 1965 after 12 years absence, he didn’t restart “from zero”. And neither is Yundi.
        The connoisseurs still remember him.

He survived the witch-hunting by CPC. Bless him a brighter future!

  • HDer says:

Going through a big setback and then starting over takes guts. The tough times he’s faced will only make his music richer. Glad to see him back onstage! Can’t wait for the new album to drop!

  • Cindy_889 says:

Good to see his back! Looking forward to his upcoming projects of Mozart sonatas and concerti.

  • Sue says:

I love Yundi’s music so much. Looking forward to the concerts.

  • Marc Lucien Rajotte says:

Ya know…Making music dips into the same GOD Given passion (or without God if you want) into the obvious passion that we humans can muster when it comes to Art, Poetry, Music and the Sacred capacity to create another human being. Sexuality is part of this passion: how dare any of you stolid/repressed/has-beens(lying to themselves about their own passions) point the finger at this artist who dares to steal fire from the gods.SO be it that “let the first one among you cast the first stone.” Yundi Li as a beautiful human soul who p-lays the piano like no one else.
