The Detroit Symphony has appointed Tabita Berglund – no relation to the late Paavo – as its principal guest conductor.

The Norwegian, 34, has been principal guest in Kristiansand for the past four years. She made her debut with Detroit only last month.

She is fabulous…It´s an unvaluable asset for a conductor to be a first rate orchestra player as well( she is a fantastic cellist, having studied with Truls Mork)…Playing a concert under her was a very strong experience!

I’m not super woke or anything, but sometimes I’m baffled by the decisions that the DSO makes, in a city that is more than 3/4 black

I have friends in the DSO and when asked they said the hire was heavily influenced by positive musician reviews. I’m assuming their management wanted to sign her before she gets busier and have a few weeks each season that don’t require scrapping for another random guest conductor from some artist managements roster. Hope it ends up a good decision for DSO.
