An inquest in Dorset heard today that a woman died after being knocked down by a car driven by the cellist Adrian Brendel in December 2022. Brendel, 48, was driving home from a concert in Oxford when his car hit Natalie Mountford,45, who was assisting another motorist in distress.

Brendel, son of the pianist Alfred Brendel, said he braked as soon as he saw the two cars ahead but, in icy conditions, was unable to stop his Citroen Berlingo from colliding with them. Brendel told Ms Mountford’s family that he was ‘personally devastated and traumatised’.

The inquest was told that police found no wrongdoing on his part: ‘We have got no evidence to say the manner of driving of Mr Brendel is either dangerous or careless.’

Nothing like tabloid-style headlines that here indict the driver instead of responsibly adding “accidentally.”

Cause of the accident is revealed in the last paragraph of the DM, a burst water pipe not fixed by Wessex Water, and road not closed by Dorset Council. Just shows the abysmal state of our roads and utilities.

Police say no blame attached to Brendel and the first attending officer skidded at the scene!

A sad story. Maybe SD should stop this ‘musicians in cars’ series out of respect.

Who on earth would anyone thumbs down the incredibly pertinent points of fact in the comments above. Shame on you, under whichever rock you reside.
