My favorite memory of Roger is from the few minutes before my MM recital. He could tell I was nervous and he took me outside on a beautiful Austin day and told me random stories to make me laugh. I didn’t realize it, but he was watching the clock and kept me laughing outside until 1-2 minutes after the recital’s start time. Then, he brought me and said, “well, out you go. Good on you. I’m very proud of your work,” and basically pushed me on stage. It was a happy, successful recital and I have thought back on it many times.

Kind of shock to hear he’s dead. He was a flamboyant personality with a lot of energy. I wasn’t a huge fan of his playing but sad to hear he’s gone so young.

  • Antony Walker says:

I am deeply saddened to hear that my colleague Roger Myers has died. We attended the same high school in Sydney, played in school orchestras together, and then reconnected 25 years later at a wonderful summer festival in the US that we were both working at.
Rog was a fantastic human being and a wonderful, passionate musician. Flamboyant, intelligent and witty: he was one of a kind, and will be missed. Vale, Roger…

  • Sam says:

Roger, I remember those USC days that we were in the same studio. You have so much passion in music and so focus. You are always an inspiration! You will be missed deeply. RIP…till we meet again.

  • Isaac Thompson says:

I had the honor of serving as Roger’s graduate teaching assistant when he was chair of the string department at the University of Texas at Austin from 2007 till 2009. Rog was ‘one-of-kind’ – full of life and energy with an incredibly deep love of music and teaching. He was also such a generous person. I’ll never forget the numerous meals and laughs we shared – and our constant debates about the best recording of Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion. A lover of rare books, when I graduated he gave me an early edition printing of poetry by William Wordsworth – a gift that I cherish to this day. Thank you dear Rog for the impact you had on me, and so many others. You will be missed.
