Mirga dumps Munich
OperaThe Salzburg based conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla has stunned Bavarian oper by pulling out of its new production of Pelleas et Melisande, scheduled for July.
She says: ‘For personal reasons, I have to limit my activities in the coming months and therefore very much regret that I have to cancel my participation in the new production of Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande at the Bavarian State Opera. However, I look forward to returning to the Bavarian State Opera with a new production in the 2024-25 season.’
Her replacement is the Finn, Hannu Lintu, previously unseen in Munich.
I’m impressed by how Mirga, though still “on the rise,” is willing to turn down high-profile engagements in favor of personal priorities.
Hannu Lintu is a wonderful conductor, so good for both him and Munich.
It’s a generational issue. The attitude is that if this job doesn’t give me what I want, I’ll take the job down the block with the competition no will accommodate me.
It is hard to understand how people obsessed with having a powerhouse female conductor are surprised when, as happens in all fields, she has children and doesn’t wish to sacrifice them immediately on the alter of career. Note that the person ready to step in at a moments notice is male. If you want more conductors (or doctors) working all the damn time then you need to favour hiring/training men. If you don’t want to do that then don’t be shocked when you need more people than before to cover the same amount of work due to more part time contracts and career breaks, celebrate it because that is what you wanted and chose. So why use the words “dumps”?
In music there is a massive oversupply of people who have been trained, so the more part time, the more people get a share.
Are cancelations a gender issue, or a Mirga issue?
I surmise she may be ‘infanticipating’ …
Dumps? Didn’t she just have a baby and scale back her professional activity in general? Give her some slack.
I was never into her, but at same time, I”m so over her.
Praise the Lord for more new babies.
Hannu is much beteer.
Can we call the pink elephant in the middle of the living room here? Pelleas is such a crashing bore! Who could blame anyone for cancelling on it?
Replace your very blocked lug holes with some ears and you’ll be amazed at the difference.
If she performed more, she would be less great.
She was an expert doing that when in Birmingham with the CBSO.
During her time there she cancelled nearly as many concerts as she performed.
She’s not missed!
